Coming to Japanese theaters in July of 2015, director Mamoru Hosoda who brought us Summer Wars and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (animated version) heads up this tale of a lonely boy who finds a friend and mentor in the monster Kumatetsu.
Hosoda’s last film was the 2012 release Wolf Children which was a heartbreaking tale of a pairing between a human woman and a werewolf and the two children the mother must raise alone when her mate is hunted and killed. This latest effort is supposed to tackle the subject matter of father-son relationships; what happens to children when they lack a paternal figure. Wolf Children won critical acclaim for it’s handling of the maternal relationship so, it will be interesting to see how well he does with this other paradigm.
It’s always great to see animated features tackling serious subjects in a serious way.
