To be directed by Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows, Hunt for the Wilderpeople), Thor Ragnarok will feature a returning MCU cast of characters including Chris Hemsworth (THOR); fan favorite Tom Hiddleston (Loki); and Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk/Bruce Banner.
The plot is still largely under wraps, but Marvel is announcing a rather interesting cast of newcomers in equally interesting comics roles. Cate Blanchett joins the cast as goddess Hela, ruler of the Asgardian equivalent of hell. Hopefully that means the introduction of real magic. You can catch a glimpse of Hela in the image above.
Also coming to a Marvel Universe near you is the always awesome Jeff Goldblum in the role of Grandmaster a near-immortal super being who’s tangled with the Avengers in the comics and has the ability to control life/death. Interesting thing about this character is we’ve already seen him in the Guardians of the Galaxy cartoon so, he may be a further link to that world of characters. Wouldn’t be surprised if we see him again in Infinity War. I suspect it would be in his best interest to ally himself with the good guys.
Actress Tessa Thompson will play Valkyrie, the Asgard equivalent to an angel. Sorta. Karl Urban plays Skurge; a half Frost Giant, half Asgardian thorn in THOR’s side. In the comics he was the right hand muscle to sorceress Enchantress. I wonder if he’ll be with Hela this time out or if they’ve simply yet to cast the character.
The THOR solo films began on shaky ground, but have managed to progressively find their footing. Here’s hoping this latest installment will push the franchise over the finish.
