News: It’s Pilot season at Amazon Instant Video

Amazon has not had as high a track record with their original programming, but that hasn’t slowed them down. Today they’ve made available a new batch of original pilot programming that anyone can watch FREE through the Amazon Instant Video site and mobile applications.

Unlike with the last round of programming, the content is mostly skewed to well known creatives. The After, for example, is a new series set to be run by X-Files and Millennium creator Chris Carter. Other show talent includes showrunners behind Six Feet Under and a classical music docudrama from Moonrise Kingdom’s Jason Schwartzman.

Looking at the line-up this season it seems that Amazon is playing it safer and not just with the talent involved. Take a look at the descriptions and see if you agree.

The After
Eight strangers are thrown together by mysterious forces and must help each other survive in a violent world.

A homicide detective works to solve the murder of a boy while standing trial for the murder of a serial killer.

Mozart in the Jungle
Sex, drugs — and classical music — see what happens behind the curtains at the symphony.

The Rebels
Julie is in over her head when her husband suddenly dies, leaving her the owner of a pro football team.

A family with serious boundary issues have their past and future unravel after a dramatic admission.

Makes you wonder how well their existing crop of show originals have actually been doing. You could almost match each show up to an existing series on other networks (Netflix among them). Heck, some of the series even use the same actors from the shows their cribbing from. Transparent is basically Arrested Development, for example.
