News: Doug Liman leaves Gambit to helm Justice League Dark

Variety reports that director Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow, Bourne Identity, Mr & Mrs Smith) will be directing the comic2film adaptation of the DC Justice League Dark comics.  Fanboy filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (Mimic, Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy) will be producing. Guillermo had originally been attached to this film as director himself, but has in recent times stepped aside to shepherd the potential feature in a support capacity.

Liman has prior experience with comics2film in the form of his criminally underwatched manga adaptation Edge of Tomorrow, based on the manga (and novel) All You Need Is Kill.  Liman made a name for himself with the fantastic indie film Swingers and has since re-invented himself as an innovative action film director with Mr & Mrs Smith and the Jason Bourne series of films.  Justice League Dark appears to be his next re-invention as he tackles the Horror/Dark Fantasy genre.

The antiheroes that will make up this iteration of the JLD team are reported to include The Demon Etrigan; John Constantine; Zatanna; Deadman; and Swamp Thing.  There could be more classic characters making appearances, but that appears to be the core group they’ll be tackling for this outing.  I’m especially interested to see Etrigan as he is my favorite of the DC Dark characters.  I expect FC’s own Richard will be rooting for Constantine.  Regardless of who you prefer, it’s exciting news to finally hear that this project is going forward.
