First Issue: Star Wars – Shattered Empire

Welcome to the first of our new line of articles, briefly exploring the first issues of new comics to the stand. With these articles we hope we can guide you in the right direction for which new comics might most suit your fancy. Starting us off is the comic that will lead us directly into the latest Star Wars movie…

SWSEWriter: Greg Rucker

Art: Marco Checchetto

Colour: Andres Mossa

Story: Immediately following the defeat of the empire at the end of the original trilogy, during the celebrations on Endor, Han Solo is charged with leading a small team of Rebels to take out the remaining Empire strongholds on the planet, there they discover something that might suggest the war is not as won as it seems.

Why read it?: This mini-series will be the official bride between the original trilogy and the new Disney produced films, but if this weren’t enough to get you excited, it’s written by one of contemporary comics best writers, Greg Rucker, a master in sci-fi, crime and character. Checchetto, somewhat less well known but no less talented, brings a slick art style that is the middle point of John Buscema and Japan’s Mad House Studio (Ninja Scroll). Between the two of them we are delivered a rich story that contains frenetic space battles, nuanced characters and a cliffhanger ending that will not only spur you on to get the next issue but add intriguing layers to the known Star Wars mythology.
