First Issue: Black Magic

black magicWriter: Greg Rucka

Artist: Nicola Scott

Story: Detective Rowan Black is called into a hostage situation when her presence specifically is requested by the perp. Freeing the hostages in exchange for Black he explains that voices in his head are forcing his hand to do something very drastic; it’s no coincidence that the good Detective is a practitioner of the black arts.

Why read it?: Greg Rucka is a legend in the industry; originally specialising in crime and espionage centred stories, he now takes those sensibilities into other genres to create pieces of awesomeness, and with Black Magic he’s created something that can only be described and supernatural-noir. His pacey but intriguing story is executed beautifully and with incredible detail by Noicola Scott whose wonderful grey washes only add to the noir-ish atmosphere.
