Events: Geek Spot – Atlanta Dragon*Con

Dragon*Con is Atlanta’s largest and longest standing privately run science fiction convention.  It attracts over 40, 000 attendees over its 4 day weekend and has been running since 1987.

Among America’s genre entertainment conventions, D*C stands unique…primarily because of its emphasis on original topics, panel discussions, and workshop offerings.  In years past I’ve seen everything from computer hacking workshops to lectures on hard science topics presented by NASA employees, to custom robot battles, to puppet jams.  Of course there are also the expected topics such as how-to demonstrations of  advanced F/X and makeup techniques, seemstressing workshops, celebrity panels, film festivals, classic D&D tournaments, and much more.

So, that’s the pitch.  For those looking to drop in on this event, what’s out there to look forward to this year?

The Artists

Just a sampling of this year’s favourites includes Bill Sienkiewicz, Steve Dillon, Travis Louie, Boris Vallejo, Michael Whelan, Bernie Wrightson, William Stout, Jim Steranko, Brian Stelfreeze, Karl Story, and Darwyn Cooke among many others.

The Authors

Anne MacCaffrey, Terry Brooks, Fiona Broome, Mike Resnick, Charlaine Harris, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Jonathan Maberry, and Rebecca Moesta to name a few.

Actors and other Celebs

Adam Baldwin, Felicia Day, Martin Landau, Stan Lee, Lance Henriksen, Tom Felton, Nicole de Boer, Kristin Bauer, William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Julie Benz, Ralph Bakshi, Amanda Tapping, Robert Englund, Lou Ferrigno, Joe Manganiello, and Laura Vandervoort among others.

Best of All

What really keeps us going to Dragon Con, however, is the fact that D*C continues to draw the largest number of true and genuine geeks and fans.  Something that’s hard to find in many of the other competing cons.  There’s a genuine feeling that we’re all there for the right reasons. To celebrate and revel in the sub-culture we love.
